In the week ending Feb. 24, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 359,000, a decrease of 23,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 382,000. The 4-week moving average was
372,250, a decrease of 8,250 from the previous week's revised average of
380,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending Feb. 17, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Feb. 17, was 2,691,000, an increase of
36,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,655,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,676,500, a decrease of 6,000 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,682,500.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 347,961 in the week ending Feb. 24, a decrease of
47,345 from the previous week. There were 316,927 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9
percent during the week ending Feb. 17, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 3,283,331, a decrease of 16,294 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent and the volume was 3,066,721.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending Feb. 10.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,580 in the week ending Feb. 17, a decrease of 1,573 from
the prior week. There were 2,334 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 8 from the preceding week.
There were 33,694 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 10, a decrease of 5,483 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,023, a
decrease of 1,671 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Feb. 10 were in Alaska (7.8 percent), Puerto Rico (6.1), Rhode Island (5.8),
Washington (5.3), Idaho (5.0), Montana (4.7), Oregon (4.6), the Virgin Islands
(4.6), Pennsylvania (4.4), and West Virginia (4.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Feb. 17 were in North Carolina (+13,550), Tennessee (+6,048), Alabama (+3,878),
Georgia (+3,616), and Oklahoma (+2,991), while the largest decreases were in
California (-20,951), Pennsylvania (-5,969), Ohio (-4,732), Washington
(-3,822), and Minnesota (-3,029).
