In the week ending Feb. 17, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 391,000, an increase of 5,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 386,000. The 4-week moving average was
383,000, a decrease of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average of
388,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending Feb. 10, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.5 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Feb. 10, was 2,676,000, a decrease of
92,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,768,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,695,750, a decrease of 19,000 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,714,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 401,256 in the week ending Feb. 17, a decrease of
41,152 from the previous week. There were 356,237 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9
percent during the week ending Feb. 10, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 3,302,091, a decrease of 110,840 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was
3,141,413.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Feb. 3.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 4,156 in the week ending Feb. 10, a decrease of 5,089 from
the prior week. There were 2,338 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
an increase of 119 from the preceding week.
There were 39,176 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 3, an increase of 3,045 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 29,628, an
increase of 1,425 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Feb. 3 were in Alaska (7.7 percent), Puerto Rico (6.4), Rhode Island (6.2),
Washington (5.5), Idaho (5.3), Montana (5.3), Pennsylvania (4.8), West Virginia
(4.7), Maine (4.3), California (4.2), and the Virgin Islands (4.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Feb. 10 were in California (+7,680), Texas (+4,547), Ohio (+3,613), North
Carolina (+3,349), and Mississippi (+2,374), while the largest decreases were
in the District of Columbia (-3,954), Missouri (-3,769), Wisconsin (-2,677),
Illinois (-2,600), and Nebraska (-1,315).
