SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Feb. 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 387,000, an increase of 21,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 366,000. The 4-week moving average was 388,500, an increase of 17,750 from the previous week's revised average of 370,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent for the week ending Feb. 3, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb. 3, was 2,777,000, an increase of 151,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,626,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,716,500, an increase of 62,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,654,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 444,321 in the week ending Feb. 10, an increase of 10,585 from the previous week. There were 387,339 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.1 percent during the week ending Feb. 3, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,424,427, an increase of 163,299 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent and the volume was 3,063,391.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Jan. 27.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 9,243 in the week ending Feb. 3, an increase of 1,718 from the prior week. There were 2,217 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 314 from the preceding week.

There were 36,173 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 27, a decrease of 6,665 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,196, a decrease of 1,643 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 27 were in Alaska (7.9 percent), Puerto Rico (6.6), Rhode Island (5.9), Washington (4.9), Pennsylvania (4.7), Idaho (4.6), West Virginia (4.6), Oregon (4.3), Maine (4.2), and Montana (4.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 3 were in California (+6,769), the District of Columbia (+3,485), Washington (+3,113), Missouri (+2,970), and Wisconsin (+2,825), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-16,713), Pennsylvania (-14,215), Virginia (-9,508), New York (-5,810), and Texas (-4,996).
