SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Feb. 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 368,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 389,000. The 4-week moving average was 371,250, a decrease of 6,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 377,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending Jan. 27, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 27, was 2,620,000, a decrease of 95,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,715,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,654,000, an increase of 3,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,650,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 435,940 in the week ending Feb. 3, a decrease of 56,951 from the previous week. There were 381,813 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent during the week ending Jan. 27, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,254,109, a decrease of 223,911 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,144,902.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Jan. 20.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 7,519 in the week ending Jan. 27, an increase of 774 from the prior week. There were 2,531 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 153 from the preceding week.

There were 42,909 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 20, an increase of 1,482 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 29,900, an increase of 1,305 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 20 were in Alaska (8.0 percent), Puerto Rico (7.3), Rhode Island (6.1), Pennsylvania (5.4), West Virginia (5.4), the Virgin Islands (5.3), Montana (5.1), Washington (5.0), Idaho (4.8), Maine (4.3), and Oregon (4.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 27 were in California (+5,120), Michigan (+4,173), Oklahoma (+3,843), New York (+3,704), and Washington (+2,121), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-12,461), Pennsylvania (-6,048), Alabama (-5,257), Tennessee (-5,162), and South Carolina (-4,222).
