The U.S. Department of Labor is granting the Virgin Islands
up to $1,000,000 in disaster relief funds to help approximately 100 workers in
the territory who lost their jobs due to damages resulting from Hurricane
Marilyn. Of this amount, $500,000 is available immediately.
"Hurricane Marilyn hit the Virgin Islands hard and left
many people without a job," said Labor Secretary Robert B. Reich. "This grant
will give them work and at the same time help the Island rebuild itself."
Virgin Islands Governor Roy Schneider received the grant in a ceremony at the
Labor Department. "All of us in the Virgin Islands are happy to receive these
much needed funds, which will help a few of our citizens who have lost their
jobs due to the horrible devastation caused by Hurricane Marilyn. We will
continue to work with the Department of Labor to secure added funds to assist
us in funding jobs for our residents," Schneider said.
The grant money will employ dislocated workers to help with
clean-up, repair and restoration efforts in the aftermath of the hurricane.
The grant is made possible through the labor secretary's
Job Training Partnership Act discretionary fund for emergencies and will
provide dislocated workers with assessment, temporary jobs and basic
readjustment services. Implemented by the Virgin Islands Department of Labor,
the program also provides day care assistance, transportation and emergency
medical care.
