The U.S. Department of Labor is granting up to $1,634,441
to the West Virginia Bureau of Employment Programs to assist 125 workers who
lost their jobs when the Sterling Plumbing Group in Morgantown closed. Of this
amount, $784,532 will be available immediately.
"America has experienced tremendous job growth over the
past three years, but not every industry and market segment has benefitted
equally," Labor Secretary Robert B.Reich said. "I know these workers are eager
to move forward in their job lives, and I am pleased that we can offer them the
reemployment services and the retraining they need to remain productive members
of the workforce."
The grant, authorized under the Job Training Partnership
Act, will provide a number of services including orientation and testing,
assessment, job search/placement assistance, job counseling, job development,
retraining, and emergency financial support.
The dislocated worker program is a comprehensive approach
to assist workers who have been, or are about to be, laid off for reasons such
as technological change, foreign competition or government actions. In general,
such workers are eligible if they are unlikely to return to their previous
industry or occupation.
