The U.S. Department of Labor is granting $1 million to
assist 500 workers who are being laid off by Westinghouse Electric Corporation
in Linthicum, Md., Secretary of Labor Reich announced today.
"As this country continues to adjust to a changing national
and international economy, it is critical that we retain the talents and skills
of individuals whose worklives are affected but whose contributions to society
are as vital as ever before," Reich said. "That is why training and retraining
services are so critical to our nation's workforce development."
The funding will be used to help workers being laid off by
from Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Electronic Services Group, a developer
and manufacturer of electronic systems. These layoffs are attributed to massive
downsizing and restructuring in the electronics industry. The operator for the
project will be the Business and Workforce Development Center of Anne Arundel
County.
The grant, authorized under the dislocated worker program
of the Job Training Partnership Act, will offer a number of services including
job search and placement assistance, counseling, workshops, classroom training
and relocation assistance.
The dislocated worker program is a comprehensive retraining
approach to assist workers who have been, or are about to be laid off for
reasons such as technological change, foreign competition or government
actions. Generally, such workers are eligible if they are unlikely to return to
their previous industry or occu- pation.
