The U.S. Department of Labor is granting a $5 million to
the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security to help 1,227 workers
who lost jobs because of Hurricanes Erin and Opal, Secretary of Labor Robert B.
Reich announced today.
"Areas of Florida have been seriously ravaged by the recent
hurricanes," Reich said. "We need to provide the necessary assistance to aid
the state in its recovery efforts and help citizens whose jobs have been lost
due to the devastation."
The project will be operated in Pensacola, Panama City,
Shalimar and Merritt Island. The funds will allow local governments to hire
workers to help restore and repair public property damaged by the flood.
The grant, authorized under the dislocated worker program
of the Job Training Partnership Act, will provide a number of services
including job search assistance and supportive services such as day care and
transportation assistance and emergency health care.
The dislocated worker program is a comprehensive
retraining approach to assist workers who are laid off from their jobs for
reasons such as technological change, foreign competition, natural disasters or
defense downsizing.
