SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 341,000, a decrease of 37,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 378,000. The 4-week moving average was 366,000, a decrease of 7,250 from the previous week's revised average of 373,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending Dec. 2, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 2, was 2,566,000, a decrease of 86,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,652,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,623,750, a decrease of 29,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,653,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 424,277 in the week ending Dec. 9, a decrease of 50,259 from the previous week. There were 397,238 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending Dec. 2, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,594,579, a decrease of 208,990 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,457,385.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Nov. 25.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 14,844 in the week ending Dec. 2, a decrease of 5,718 from the prior week.* There were 2,500 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 779 from the preceding week.

There were 47,869 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 25, an increase of 15,231 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 30,023, an increase of 4,984 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 25 were in Puerto Rico (7.1 percent), Alaska (6.3), the Virgin Islands (5.8), Washington (4.7), California (4.4), Pennsylvania (3.8), Rhode Island (3.7), Arkansas (3.6), Oregon (3.6), and West Virginia (3.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 2 were in California (+30,063), North Carolina (+18,968), Pennsylvania (+11,283), Alabama (+7,499), and Georgia (+7,122), while the largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-6,293), Virginia (-3,046), Louisiana (-939), New Hampshire (-149), and Idaho (-122).

*The unusually high level is attributable to the Federal shutdown which occurred during November 14-19, 1995, and delayed processing and reporting of claims taken for that period consistent with state laws.
