In the week ending Dec. 2, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 377,000, an increase of 14,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 363,000. The 4-week moving average was
372,750, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of
373,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending Nov. 25, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Nov. 25, was 2,657,000, an increase of
50,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,607,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,650,000, a decrease of 4,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,654,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 472,642 in the week ending Dec. 2, an increase of
136,417 from the previous week. There were 412,824 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5
percent during the week ending Nov. 25, an increase of 0.6 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 2,808,324, an increase of 694,411 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was
2,631,371.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Nov. 18.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 20,559 in the week ending Nov. 25, a decrease of 10,065 from
the prior week.* There were 1,721 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
a decrease of 627 from the preceding week.
There were 31,923 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 18, a decrease of 8,235 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,941, a
decrease of 4,359 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Nov. 18 were in Alaska (5.2 percent), Washington (4.0), the Virgin Islands
(3.9), Puerto Rico (3.3), Rhode Island (3.3), Oregon (3.1), Pennsylvania (2.9),
California (2.8), Idaho (2.7), Hawaii (2.6), New York (2.6), and Vermont
(2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Nov. 25 were in Wisconsin (+9,093), Louisiana (+2,147), Virginia (+1,818),
Arkansas (+641), and Idaho (+517), while the largest decreases were in
California (-25,394), Pennsylvania (-9,924), Michigan (-8,120), North Carolina
(-8,074), and Ohio (-6,618).
*The unusually high level is attributable to the Federal
shutdown which occurred during November 14-19, 1995, and delayed processing and
reporting of claims taken for that period consistent with state laws.
