SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 359,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised figure of 359,000. The 4-week moving average was 354,250, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised average of 348,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending Oct. 14, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 14 was 2,666,000, an increase of 13,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,653,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,630,000, an increase of 8,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,621,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 323,951 in the week ending Oct. 21, an increase of 17,282 from the previous week. There were 296,646 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending Oct. 14, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,226,192, an increase of 151,221 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,192,818.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Oct. 7.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 3,102 in the week ending Oct. 14, a decrease of 2,949 from the prior week. There were 2,373 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 243 from the preceding week.

There were 30,346 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 7, a decrease of 1,778 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 26,892, a decrease of 923 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 7 were in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (3.7), Rhode Island (3.2), California (3.1), Washington (3.1), Hawaii (2.9), Oregon (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), Connecticut (2.5), and New Jersey (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 14 were in North Carolina (+2,429), Tennessee (+1,604), Texas (+1,126), Mississippi (+517), and Delaware (+496), while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania (-5,535), California (-5,348), Illinois (-5,032), Missouri (-3,067), and New Jersey (-2,454).
