SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 361,000, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 356,000. The 4-week moving average was 348,750, a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 350,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending Oct. 7, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 7 was 2,657,000, an increase of 58,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,599,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,624,500, an increase of 12,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,612,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 308,418 in the week ending Oct. 14, a decrease of 36,840 from the previous week. There were 272,742 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending Oct. 7, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,078,081, a decrease of 19,006 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,005,550.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Sept. 30.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 6,044 in the week ending Oct. 7, an increase of 3,589 from the prior week. There were 2,614 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 308 from the preceding week.

There were 32,210 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 30, an increase of 4,283 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,797, a decrease of 215 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 30 were in Puerto Rico (5.8 percent), Alaska (3.8), the Virgin Islands (3.6), Rhode Island (3.3), California (3.2), Washington (3.1), Hawaii (2.9), New Jersey (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.7), Connecticut (2.5), New York (2.5), and Oregon (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 7 were in California (+8,359), Pennsylvania (+7,570), Illinois (+5,081), Washington (+3,401), and Ohio (+3,090), while the largest decreases were in Delaware (-620), and New Mexico (-129).
