SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 348,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 342,000. The 4-week moving average was 347,750, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 351,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending Sept. 30, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 30 was 2,621,000, an increase of 10,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,611,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,618,250, a decrease of 8,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,626,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 337,862 in the week ending Oct. 7, an increase of 69,497 from the previous week. There were 322,522 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending Sept. 30, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,115,327, a decrease of 22,827 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,074,777.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Sept. 23.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,445 in the week ending Sept. 30, a decrease of 1,985 from the prior week. There were 2,300 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 152 from the preceding week.

There were 27,907 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 23, a decrease of 582 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,068, a decrease of 831 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 23 were in Puerto Rico (6.7 percent), Alaska (3.9), Rhode Island (3.6), California (3.2), Washington (3.1), Hawaii (2.9), New Jersey (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.7), Connecticut (2.6), New York (2.5), and Oregon (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 30 were in Illinois (+1,211), Arkansas (+1,196), Missouri (+880), Mississippi (+731), and Delaware (+648), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-2,310), Minnesota (-1,484), Puerto Rico (-1,280), South Carolina (-1,123), and Ohio (-973).
