In the week ending Sept. 30, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 341,000, an increase of 6,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 335,000. The 4-week moving average was
351,500, a decrease of 250 from the previous week's unrevised average of
351,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending Sept. 23, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Sept. 23 was 2,622,000, a decrease of
13,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,635,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,630,000, an increase of 750 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,629,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 267,805 in the week ending Sept. 30, a decrease
of 4,612 from the previous week. There were 255,588 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent during the week ending Sept. 23, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 2,147,534, a decrease of 41,794 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was
2,117,247.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Sept. 16.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 4,429 in the week ending Sept. 23, an increase of 2,098 from
the prior week. There were 2,453 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 212 from the preceding week.
There were 28,547 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 16, an increase of 713 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,903, an
increase of 202 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Sept. 16 were in Puerto Rico (8.3 percent), Alaska (3.6), Rhode Island (3.5),
California (3.2), Washington (3.1), New Jersey (3.0), Hawaii (2.9), Connecticut
(2.7), Pennsylvania (2.7), New York (2.5), and Oregon (2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Sept. 23 were in Minnesota (+1,288), Wisconsin (+829), Ohio (+785), Puerto Rico
(+763), and Kansas (+244), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina
(-6,706), Kentucky (-3,370), Mississippi (-3,160), New York (-2,911), and South
Carolina (-2,909).
