In the week ending Sept. 23, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 335,000, a decrease of 31,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 366,000. The 4-week moving average was
351,750, a decrease of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of
355,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending Sept. 16, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Sept. 16 was 2,648,000, an increase of
39,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,609,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,632,500, an increase of 2,500 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,630,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 272,345 in the week ending Sept. 23, a decrease
of 31,908 from the previous week. There were 251,191 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent during the week ending Sept. 16, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 2,200,542, a decrease of 85,193 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was
2,162,830.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Sept. 9.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,331 in the week ending Sept. 16, an increase of 272 from
the prior week. There were 2,661 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
an increase of 269 from the preceding week.
There were 27,838 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 9, an increase of 950 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,760, an
increase of 1,406 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Sept. 9 were in Puerto Rico (6.6 percent), Rhode Island (3.8), Alaska (3.6),
Washington (3.4), California (3.3), Hawaii (3.1), New Jersey (3.1), New York
(2.8), Pennsylvania (2.8), and Connecticut (2.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Sept. 16 were in California (+7,817), North Carolina (+6,160), New York
(+4,177), Mississippi (+2,858), and South Carolina (+2,804), while the largest
decreases were in Louisiana (-3,040), Ohio (-1,798), Wisconsin (-750), Arkansas
(-466), and Illinois (-393).
