SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 365,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 364,000. The 4-week moving average was 354,750, an increase of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of 350,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending Sept. 9, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 9 was 2,623,000, a decrease of 33,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,656,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,634,000, a decrease of 750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,634,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 303,369 in the week ending Sept. 16, an increase of 37,238 from the previous week. There were 264,553 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending Sept. 9, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,297,457, an increase of 137,967 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,287,691.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Sept. 2.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,058 in the week ending Sept. 9, an increase of 76 from the prior week. There were 2,391 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 71 from the preceding week.

There were 26,959 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 2, a decrease of 656 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,367, a decrease of 1,648 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 2 were in Puerto Rico (4.0 percent), Rhode Island (4.0), Washington (3.3), Alaska (3.2), California (3.1), Hawaii (3.0), Pennsylvania (2.8), Connecticut (2.7), New Jersey (2.7), New York (2.7), and Oregon (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 9 were in Louisiana (+2,859), Ohio (+2,022), North Carolina (+1,804), Kentucky (+1,772), and Georgia (+882), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-4,482), California (-2,855), Puerto Rico (-1,974), Florida (-1,300), and Missouri (-1,245).
