In the week ending Aug. 26, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 349,000, unchanged from the previous
week's revised figure of 349,000. The 4-week moving average was 342,000, an
increase of 7,000 from the previous week's revised average of 335,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending Aug. 19, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Aug. 19 was 2,654,000, an increase of
25,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,629,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,623,250, an increase of 250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,623,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 273,386 in the week ending Aug. 26, a decrease of
12,902 from the previous week. There were 257,299 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending Aug. 19, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,380,683, a decrease of 51,450 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,392,742.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Aug. 12.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,909 in the week ending Aug. 19, a decrease of 407 from the
prior week. There were 2,553 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 271 from the preceding week.
There were 29,598 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 12, a decrease of 753 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 29,740, an
increase of 704 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Aug. 12 were in Puerto Rico (7.0 percent), Rhode Island (4.2), Alaska (3.9),
Washington (3.7), California (3.4), New Jersey (3.2), Connecticut (3.1), Hawaii
(3.1), Pennsylvania (3.1), New York (2.9), and Oregon (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Aug. 19 were in Illinois (+2,901), Ohio (+2,085), Delaware (+517), Arkansas
(+428), and Alabama (+377), while the largest decreases were in California
(-3,904), Pennsylvania (-1,485), Florida (-1,047), Michigan (-1,022), and North
Carolina (-909).
