In the week ending Sept. 9, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 362,000, an increase of 21,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 341,000. The 4-week moving average was
349,750, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised average of
343,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending Sept. 2, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Sept. 2 was 2,662,000, an increase of
38,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,624,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,637,500, an increase of 17,500 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,620,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 264,870 in the week ending Sept. 9, a decrease of
13,101 from the previous week. There were 237,526 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent during the week ending Sept. 2, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,164,581, a decrease of 175,651 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was
2,171,194.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Aug. 26.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,983 in the week ending Sept. 2, a decrease of 42 from the
prior week. There were 2,455 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 226 from the preceding week.
There were 27,871 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 26, a decrease of 1,034 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 29,055, a
decrease of 162 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Aug. 26 were in Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Rhode Island (4.2), Alaska (3.6),
Washington (3.5), California (3.3), New Jersey (3.2), Connecticut (3.1), Hawaii
(3.1), Pennsylvania (3.1), New York (2.8), Oregon (2.8), and the Virgin Islands
(2.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Sept. 2 were in Michigan (+3,796), Arkansas (+1,706), Virginia (+1,078),
Wisconsin (+924), and Delaware (+817), while the largest decreases were in
California (-2,253), Tennessee (-1,533), Missouri (-1,345), New York (-865),
and Alabama (-852).
