In the week ending Sept. 2, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 339,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 349,000. The 4-week moving average was
343,500, an increase of 1,750 from the previous week's revised average of
341,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending Aug. 26, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Aug. 26 was 2,644,000, a decrease of 1,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,645,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,626,750, an increase of 6,500 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,620,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 276,784 in the week ending Sept. 2, an increase
of 3,853 from the previous week. There were 270,561 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent during the week ending Aug. 26, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,358,172, a decrease of 14,015 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,359,336.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Aug. 19.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,035 in the week ending Aug. 26, an increase of 124 from the
prior week. There were 2,684 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 127 from the preceding week.
There were 29,271 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 19, a decrease of 16 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 29,248, a
decrease of 493 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Aug. 19 were in Puerto Rico (6.3 percent), Rhode Island (4.3), Alaska (3.6),
Washington (3.6), Hawaii (3.4), California (3.3), Connecticut (3.1), New Jersey
(3.1), Pennsylvania (3.0), and New York (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Aug. 26 were in Missouri (+1,464), New York (+1,128), Pennsylvania (+644),
Tennessee (+447), and Michigan (+333), while the largest decreases were in
Illinois (-3,677), Ohio (-2,818), North Carolina (-1,691), Arkansas (- 1,663),
and California (-1,357).
