In the week ending Aug. 19, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 348,000, an increase of 10,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 338,000. The 4-week moving average was
334,750, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of
340,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending Aug. 12, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Aug. 12 was 2,635,000, an increase of
41,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,594,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,625,000, a decrease of 35,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,660,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 285,440 in the week ending Aug. 19, a decrease of
11,267 from the previous week. There were 262,131 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending Aug. 12, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,437,546, an increase of 2,115 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,451,910.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Aug. 5.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,313 in the week ending Aug. 12, a decrease of 49 from the
prior week. There were 2,822 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 178 from the preceding week.
There were 30,370 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 5, an increase of 1,006 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,966, a
decrease of 77 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Aug. 5 were in Puerto Rico (6.7 percent), Rhode Island (4.5), Alaska (3.8),
Washington (3.6), California (3.3), Hawaii (3.3), Connecticut (3.2), New Jersey
(3.2), Pennsylvania (3.2), and New York (3.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Aug. 12 were in Florida (+1,658), Tennessee (+1,182), South Carolina (+339),
Alabama (+251), and Texas (+230), while the largest decreases were in
Pennsylvania (-1,669), Michigan (-1,199), New York (-1,055), Ohio (-988), and
Illinois (-962).
