In the week ending Aug. 12, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 338,000, an increase of 6,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 332,000. The 4-week moving average was
340,750, a decrease of 19,500 from the previous week's revised average of
360,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending Aug. 5, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Aug. 5 was 2,599,000, a decrease of 20,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,619,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,661,750, a decrease of 28,500 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,690,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 296,666 in the week ending Aug. 12, a decrease of
14,043 from the previous week. There were 277,614 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending Aug. 5, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,440,261, a decrease of 35,023 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,474,549.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending July 29.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,355 in the week ending Aug. 5, an increase of 18 from the
prior week. There were 2,998 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 146 from the preceding week.
There were 29,381 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 29, an increase of 242 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 29,093, a
decrease of 119 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
July 29 were in Puerto Rico (7.3 percent), Rhode Island (4.5), Alaska (3.9),
Washington (3.7), California (3.5), Hawaii (3.3), New Jersey (3.3), Connecticut
(3.2), Pennsylvania (3.2), and Oregon (3.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Aug. 5 were in California (+4,906), Puerto Rico (+1,073), Pennsylvania
(+1,000), Virginia (+920), and Texas (+861), while the largest decreases were
in North Carolina (-3,510), Tennessee (-2,178), Alabama (-1,950), Georgia
(-1,668), and Ohio (-1,540).
