SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 335,000, an increase of 14,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 321,000. The 4-week moving average was 361,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 377,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending July 29, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 29 was 2,638,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,660,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,696,750, a decrease of 8,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,705,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 313,195 in the week ending Aug. 5, an increase of 1,504 from the previous week. There were 304,363 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending July 29, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,493,340, a decrease of 39,080 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,510,007.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending July 22.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,334 in the week ending July 29, a decrease of 118 from the prior week. There were 2,852 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 298 from the preceding week.

There were 29,225 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 22, an increase of 388 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 29,247, an increase of 586 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 22 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Rhode Island (4.8), Alaska (4.0), Washington (3.6), California (3.4), Hawaii (3.3), New Jersey (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.3), Connecticut (3.2), New York (3.0), and Oregon (3.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 29 were in Maryland (+343), Arkansas (+322), Iowa (+253), North Dakota (+105), and Vermont (+92), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-13,764), Michigan (-13,524), North Carolina (-9,238), Alabama (-8,190), and South Carolina (-6,528).
