SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 321,000, a decrease of 51,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 372,000. The 4-week moving average was 377,000, a decrease of 11,500 from the previous week's revised average of 388,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending July 22, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.5 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 22 was 2,663,000, a decrease of 118,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,781,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,707,000, an increase of 6,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,700,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 311,162 in the week ending July 29, a decrease of 98,154 from the previous week. There were 295,979 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending July 22, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,535,234, a decrease of 173,111 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,559,819.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending July 15.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,447 in the week ending July 22, a decrease of 941 from the prior week. There were 3,148 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 449 from the preceding week.

There were 28,863 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 15, an increase of 250 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,676, an increase of 235 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 15 were in Puerto Rico (6.2 percent), Rhode Island (5.1), Alaska (4.1), California (3.7), Washington (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.4), New Jersey (3.3), Connecticut (3.2), Hawaii (3.2), New York (3.1), and Oregon (3.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 22 were in Ohio (+3,932), Indiana (+3,423), Kansas (+2,457), Delaware (+1,560), and Missouri (+794), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-18,209), Kentucky (-9,338), New York (-8,300), South Carolina (-8,025), and North Carolina (-7,323).
