In the week ending July 22, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 374,000, a decrease of 42,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 416,000. The 4-week moving average was
389,000, an increase of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of
387,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.5 percent for the week ending July 15, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending July 15 was 2,780,000, an increase of
72,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,708,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,699,000, an increase of 38,000 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,661,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 411,641 in the week ending July 22, a decrease of
80,271 from the previous week. There were 354,495 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4
percent during the week ending July 15, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,708,006, an increase of 35,214 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 2,671,851.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico,
and Rhode Island during the week ending July 8.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 3,373 in the week ending July 15, a decrease of 230 from the
prior week. There were 3,605 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 857 from the preceding week.
There were 28,679 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 8, an increase of 5,569 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,385, an
increase of 3,385 from the prior week.

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
July 15 were in North Carolina (+17,260), Michigan (+15,313), South Carolina
(+14,689), Tennessee (+14,037), and Alabama (+13,692), while the largest
decreases were in Indiana (-6,844), Wisconsin (-6,000), Iowa (2,448),
Massachusetts (-2,385), and Maryland (-2,096).
