UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 370,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised figure of 370,000. The 4-week moving average was 376,250, a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 377,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending July 1, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 2.4 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 1 was 2,666,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,686,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,649,250, an increase of 21,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,627,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 397,490 in the week ending July 8, an increase of 53,425 from the previous week. There were 394,428 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending July 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,287,769, a decrease of 142,788 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,358,971.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Rhode Island during the week ending June 24.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,963 in the week ending July 1, an increase of 835 from the prior week. There were 2,575 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 65 from the preceding week.

There were 26,204 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 24, an increase of 1,621 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,314, an increase of 1,249 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 24 were in Puerto Rico (6.4 percent), Alaska (4.9), Rhode Island (4.5), Washington (3.6), California (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.3), Hawaii (3.2), Oregon (3.1), Connecticut (3.0), and New Jersey (3.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 1 were in Virginia (+5,569), New York (+3,969), Texas (+2,595), Indiana (+2,338), and Wisconsin (+1,530), while the largest decreases were in California (-1,778), Florida (-1,023), Tennessee (-939), Oregon (-845), and Washington (-812).
