The U.S. Department of Labor is providing a grant for
$1,513,097 to assist 361 former defense industry workers in the Detroit Metro
Area, Macomb, Oakland and Wayne County sections of Michigan, Secretary of Labor
Robert B. Reich announced today.
"We need to continue to use the talents and skills of all
our workers," Reich said. "That is why we must provide the necessary training,
retraining and support services so our workforce can remain not just employed,
but as competitive as any in the global market."
The funding will be used to assist workers dislocated from
the General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS), a defense contractor engaged in the
production of the M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank and provider of armor systems
support services in Sterling Heights.
These dislocations are attributed to the reduction in
defense spending and the reduced production of the M1A2 main battle tank of
which GDLS is the sole manufacturer.
The grant announced today brings to $3.3 million the total
awarded Michigan for nealy 1,000 dislocations at GDLS. The project will be
operated by the Macomb/St Clair Private Industry Council and is a joint venture
between the state and the UAW- General Dynamics Land Systems Division.
The grant, authorized under the Job Training Partnership
Act, will provide project participants with a number of services including
assessment, job search assistance, counseling, job development and placement,
classroom training, on-the-job train- ing, relocation assistance and supportive
services.
The dislocated worker program is a comprehensive retraining
approach to assist workers who have been, or are about to be laid off for
reasons such as technological change, foreign competition or government
actions. Generally such workers are eligible if they are unlikely to return to
their previous industry or occupa- tion.
