SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 369,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised figure of 369,000. The 4-week moving average was 377,250, a decrease of 1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 378,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent for the week ending June 24, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 24 was 2,707,000, an increase of 79,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,628,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,633,000, an increase of 29,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,604,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 343,068 in the week ending July 1, an increase of 18,666 from the previous week. There were 327,262 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the week ending June 24, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,449,811, an increase of 71,673 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,477,528.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Rhode Island during the week ending June 17.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,125 in the week ending June 24, a decrease of 129 from the prior week. There were 2,510 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 31 from the preceding week.

There were 24,636 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 17, a decrease of 642 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,087, an increase of 313 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 17 were in Puerto Rico (6.0 percent), Alaska (4.9), Rhode Island (4.1), Washington (3.6), California (3.5), Hawaii (3.1), Oregon (3.1), Pennsylvania (3.1), Connecticut (2.9), and New Jersey (2.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 24 were in California (+3,891), New Jersey (+3,691), Massachusetts (+3,356), New York (+1,234), and Connecticut (+1,035), while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania (-3,408), North Carolina (-3,351), Missouri (-3,348), South Carolina (-1,930), and Delaware (-1,899).
