In the week ending June 24, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 368,000, a decrease of 28,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 396,000. The 4-week moving average was
378,500, a decrease of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of
381,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending June 17, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending June 17 was 2,622,000, an increase of 3,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,619,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,603,000, an increase of 9,250 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,593,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 323,449 in the week ending June 24, a decrease of
14,365 from the previous week. There were 305,863 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending June 17, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,373,290, an increase of 300 from the preceding week. A year earlier,
the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,460,985.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico,
and Rhode Island during the week ending June 10.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,245 in the week ending June 17, a decrease of 446 from the
prior week. There were 2,537 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 193 from the preceding week.
There were 25,282 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 10, an increase of 1,176 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 26,923, a
decrease of 469 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
June 10 were in Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (4.7), Rhode Island (4.3),
Washington (3.7), California (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.2), Hawaii (3.1), Oregon
(3.1), Connecticut (2.9), and New Jersey (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
June 17 were in Delaware (+2,062), Pennsylvania (+1,954), Michigan (+1,516),
Missouri (+1,467), and New Jersey (+1,154), while the largest decreases were in
New York (-2,444), Indiana (-1,910), Tennessee (-1,269), Illinois (-1,060), and
Mississippi (-800).
