The U.S. Department of Labor is awarding $4 million to the
California Employment Development Department to assist approximately 3,000
disloated workers, Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich announced today. This
award, combined with a previous disaster award, provides California with $29
million to alleviate the effects of the recent floods.
"The floods cost these workers their jobs and they need
help geeting their feet on the ground," Reich said. "With these funds we hope
to help both the dislocated workers and their communities."
The award will be used to provide approximately 3,000
participants dislocated as a result of the floods and the long- term unemployed
workers with temporary jobs cleaning up the aftermath of the devastating
flooding in northern and southern California.
In addition to hourly wages ranging from $6.27 to $22 per
hour, participants will receive necessary supportive services.
The grant is authorized under of the Job Training
Partnership Act and will provide job search assistance and supportive services
such as day care and transportation assistance,and emergency health care.
