In the week ending June 17, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 395,000, an increase of 20,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 375,000. The 4-week moving average was
381,000, an increase of 3,750 from the previous week's revised average of
377,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending June 10, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending June 10 was 2,626,000, an increase of
47,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,579,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,595,250, an increase of 22,750 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,572,500.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 337,356 in the week ending June 17, a decrease of
3,199 from the previous week. There were 298,198 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending June 10, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,378,953, a decrease of 32,400 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,506,642.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico,
and Rhode Island during the week ending June 3.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,673 in the week ending June 10, an increase of 45 from the
prior week. There were 2,730 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 768 from the preceding week.
There were 24,112 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 3, an increase of 378 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,504, an
increase of 757 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
June 3 were in Puerto Rico (6.5 percent), Alaska (5.3), Rhode Island (4.0),
Washington (3.8), California (3.6), Oregon (3.2), New Jersey (3.1),
Pennsylvania (3.1), Hawaii (3.0), Connecticut (2.9), and New York (2.9).The
largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 10 were in
California (+10,977), New York (+3,693), Pennsylvania (+3,507), Texas (+2,538),
and South Carolina (+2,426), while the largest decreases were in Arkansas
(-1,198), Mississippi (-409), Colorado (-279), North Dakota (-130), and Wyoming
(-61).
