In the week ending June 10, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 371,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 376,000. The 4-week moving average was
376,500, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of
375,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending June 3, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending June 3 was 2,578,000, a decrease of 13,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,591,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,572,250, an increase of 24,500 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,547,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 336,169 in the week ending June 10, an increase
of 49,285 from the previous week. There were 309,033 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending June 3, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,410,304, an increase of 122,221 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was
2,539,802.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico,
and Rhode Island during the week ending May 27.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,587 in the week ending June 3, an increase of 731 from the
prior week. There were 1,970 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 344 from the preceding week.
There were 23,758 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 27, a decrease of 427 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 26,586, a
decrease of 610 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
May 27 were in Puerto Rico (5.6 percent), Alaska (4.8), Rhode Island (4.2),
Washington (3.7), California (3.4), Oregon (3.1), Pennsylvania (3.1), Hawaii
(3.0), Idaho (2.9), and Connecticut (2.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
June 3 were in Wisconsin (+428), Iowa (+356), Arkansas (+335), Oklahoma (+286),
and Louisiana (+265), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-7,031),
California (-4,976), Mississippi (-2,172), New York (-2,068), and Pennsylvania
(-1,647).
