In the week ending June 3, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 372,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 379,000. The 4-week moving average was
374,500, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of
373,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending May 27, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending May 27 was 2,592,000, an increase of 3,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,589,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,549,000, an increase of 21,000 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,528,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 284,314 in the week ending June 3, a decrease of
29,918 from the previous week. There were 273,849 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent during the week ending May 27, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,288,386, a decrease of 109,239 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was
2,440,732.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico,
and Rhode Island during the week ending May 20.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,854 in the week ending May 27, an increase of 38 from the
prior week. There were 2,311 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 97 from the preceding week.
There were 24,194 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 20, a decrease of 2,287 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,194, a
decrease of 1,068 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
May 20 were in Puerto Rico (6.4 percent), Alaska (5.7), Rhode Island (4.2),
Washington (3.8), California (3.7), Oregon (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.1), Hawaii
(3.0), Idaho (3.0), Connecticut (2.9), New Jersey (2.9), and Vermont (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
May 27 were in Michigan (+4,127), Mississippi (+1,650), Ohio (+1,613), Missouri
(+657), and Colorado (+591), while the largest decreases were in California
(-6,084), Oklahoma (-1,883), Oregon (-972), New Jersey (-799), and Idaho
(-719).
