In the week ending May 27, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 389,000, an increase of 9,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 380,000. The 4-week moving average was
376,000, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of
371,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending May 20, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending May 20 was 2,618,000, an increase of 83,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,535,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,535,250, an increase of 24,250 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,511,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 322,409 in the week ending May 27, an increase of
6,100 from the previous week. There were 291,797 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending May 20, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,423,818, a decrease of 4,453 from the preceding week. A year earlier,
the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,522,357.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico,
and Rhode Island during the week ending May 13.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,813 in the week ending May 20, an increase of 31 from the
prior week. There were 2,215 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 151 from the preceding week.
There were 26,542 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 13, an increase of 1,481 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,315, an
increase of 642 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
May 13 were in Puerto Rico (7.1 percent), Alaska (5.5), Rhode Island (4.5),
Washington (3.9), California (3.7), Oregon (3.4), Idaho (3.3), Pennsylvania
(3.2), Hawaii (3.1), and Montana (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
May 20 were in North Carolina (+2,785), Michigan (+2,565), Virginia (+1,587),
Mississippi (+1,373), and Oregon (+1,340), while the largest decreases were in
California (-4,530), New York (-1,405), Ohio (-864), Washington (-864), and
Indiana (-634).
