In the week ending May 20, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 380,000, an increase of 13,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 367,000. The 4-week moving average was
371,500, an increase of 7,250 from the previous week's revised average of
364,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending May 13, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending May 13 was 2,542,000, an increase of 59,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,483,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,513,500, an increase of 20,250 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,493,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 315,785 in the week ending May 20, an increase of
4,148 from the previous week. There were 299,324 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending May 13, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,435,518, an increase of 24,061 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 2,644,286.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico,
and Rhode Island during the week ending May 6.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,782 in the week ending May 13, a decrease of 216 from the
prior week. There were 2,366 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 51 from the preceding week.
There were 25,089 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 6, a decrease of 2,281 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,654, a
decrease of 1,329 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
May 6 were in Alaska (6.2 percent), Puerto Rico (6.0), Rhode Island (4.4),
Washington (3.9), California (3.6), Oregon (3.4), Idaho (3.3), Pennsylvania
(3.2), Vermont (3.2), and Maine (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
May 13 were in Indiana (+1,239), Tennessee (+842), Alabama (+719), Wisconsin
(+688), and Mississippi (+569), while the largest decreases were in Michigan
(-3,314), Pennsylvania (-2,504), California (-2,412), Oregon (-2,264), and
Delaware (-1,862).
