In the week ending May 13, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 364,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 366,000. The 4-week moving average was
363,000, an increase of 5,750 from the previous week's revised average of
357,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending May 6, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending May 6 was 2,479,000, a decrease of 32,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,511,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,493,000, an increase of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,489,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 308,977 in the week ending May 13, a decrease of
14,973 from the previous week. There were 303,190 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending May 6, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,407,343, a decrease of 96,523 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was
2,606,450.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico,
and Rhode Island during the week ending April 29.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,985 in the week ending May 6, an increase of 226 from the
prior week. There were 2,415 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 295 from the preceding week.
There were 27,502 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 29, an increase of 511 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 29,075, an
increase of 225 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
April 29 were in Alaska (6.5 percent), Puerto Rico (6.1), Rhode Island (4.6),
Washington (4.0), California (3.9), Oregon (3.6), Idaho (3.5), Vermont (3.5),
Maine (3.4), Montana (3.3), and Pennsylvania (3.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
May 6 were in California (+8,628), Pennsylvania (+3,247), Michigan (+3,193),
Delaware (+1,910), and Florida (+1,672), while the largest decreases were in
North Carolina (-2,494), New York (-2,333), New Jersey (-1,207), Ohio (-930),
and Tennessee (-605).
