In the week ending April 29, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 371,000, an increase of 20,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 351,000. The 4-week moving average was
351,750, an increase of 7,250 from the previous week's revised average of
344,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending April 22, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending April 22 was 2,527,000, an increase of
65,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,462,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,473,000, an increase of 500 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,472,500.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 305,698 in the week ending April 29, a decrease
of 11,493 from the previous week. There were 285,837 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4
percent during the week ending April 22, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,597,407, a decrease of 39,636 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.6 percent and the volume was 2,729,535.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Puerto Rico,
and Rhode Island during the week ending April 15.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,849 in the week ending April 22, a decrease of 41 from the
prior week. There were 2,250 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 15 from the preceding week.
There were 29,035 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 15, an increase of 294 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 30,361, an
increase of 1,049 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
April 15 were in Alaska (6.4 percent), Puerto Rico (6.0), Rhode Island (5.0),
Washington (4.2), California (4.0), Oregon (3.7), Vermont (3.7), Idaho (3.6),
Maine (3.6), and Montana (3.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
April 22 were in Massachusetts (+3,830), New Jersey (+3,664), Connecticut
(+2,273), North Carolina (+1,655), and New York (+1,628), while the largest
decreases were in California (-4,891), Georgia (-3,966), Texas (-1,601),
Illinois (-1,358), and Virginia (-1,315).
