In the week ending April 22, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 349,000, an increase of 8,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 341,000. The 4-week moving average was
344,000, an increase of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of
341,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending April 15, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending April 15 was 2,472,000, an increase of
6,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,466,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,475,750, a decrease of 4,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,480,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 315,905 in the week ending April 22, a decrease
of 2,092 from the previous week. There were 298,620 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4
percent during the week ending April 15, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,647,200, a decrease of 23,005 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.7 percent and the volume was 2,843,275.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico
during the week ending April 8.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,888 in the week ending April 15, a decrease of 524 from the
prior week. There were 2,234 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 203 from the preceding week.
There were 28,821 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits during the week ending April 8, a decrease of 2,660 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 29,304,
a decrease of 1,557 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
April 8 were in Alaska (7.1 percent), Rhode Island (5.3), Puerto Rico (5.0),
Washington (4.3), California (4.0), Maine (4.0), Idaho (3.8), Montana (3.7),
Oregon (3.7), and Vermont (3.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
April 15 were in Georgia (+2,923), California (+1,122), New York (+777), New
Mexico (+604), and Nebraska (+512), while the largest decreases were in
Michigan (-5,403), Pennsylvania (-4,902), Oklahoma (-3,657), Indiana (-2,859),
and Alabama (-2,159).
