SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending April 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 342,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 347,000. The 4-week moving average was 342,250, a decrease of 1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 343,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending April 8, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 8 was 2,470,000, an increase of 20,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,450,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,483,500, a decrease of 17,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,500,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 318,884 in the week ending April 15, a decrease of 40,919 from the previous week. There were 327,166 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending April 8, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,675,386, a decrease of 71,086 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent and the volume was 2,974,931.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the week ending April 1.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,417 in the week ending April 8, an increase of 862 from the prior week. There were 2,432 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 312 from the preceding week.

There were 31,617 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits during the week ending April 1, an increase of 603 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 31,090, a decrease of 302 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 1 were in Alaska (6.3 percent), Puerto Rico (6.1), Rhode Island (5.2), California (4.3), Washington (4.2), Maine (3.9), Idaho (3.8), Montana (3.7), Oregon (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.5), and Vermont (3.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 8 were in Pennsylvania (+8,108), Michigan (+5,338), Oklahoma (+3,831), California (+3,149), and Florida (+3,108), while the largest decreases were in Maine (-588), New Hampshire (-441), New Mexico (-242), Colorado (-48), and Nebraska (-34).
