In the week ending April 8, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 338,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 342,000. The 4-week moving average was
341,500, a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of
342,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.2 percent for the week ending April 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending April 1 was 2,464,000, a decrease of 66,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,530,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,505,250, a decrease of 9,000 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,514,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 350,622 in the week ending April 8, an increase
of 57,195 from the previous week. There were 361,348 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5
percent during the week ending April 1, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,762,423, a decrease of 129,006 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent and the volume was
2,992,338.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico
during the week ending March 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,554 in the week ending April 1, a decrease of 167 from the
prior week. There were 2,120 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 239 from the preceding week.
There were 31,045 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits during the week ending March 25, a decrease of 2,679 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 31,372,
a decrease of 1,095 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
March 25 were in Alaska (7.1 percent), Puerto Rico (6.7), Rhode Island (5.9),
Idaho (4.6), Washington (4.6), California (4.3), Maine (4.2), Montana (4.2),
Oregon (4.0), and Pennsylvania (3.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
April 1 were in Illinois (+1,301), New Hampshire (+1,243), Colorado (+1,075),
North Carolina (+933), and Puerto Rico (+731), while the largest decreases were
in California (-9,356), Oregon (-1,983), Ohio (-1,584), Texas (-823), and
Georgia (-815).
