In the week ending April 1, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 341,000, an increase of 3,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 338,000. The 4-week moving average was
342,500, an increase of 750 from the previous week's unrevised average of
341,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending March 25, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 25 was 2,531,000, an increase of
40,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,491,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,515,000, an increase of 6,500 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,508,500.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 291,915 in the week ending April 1, a decrease of
13,570 from the previous week. There were 289,631 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7
percent during the week ending March 25, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,893,397, a decrease of 41,260 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,094,818.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico
during the week ending March 18.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,717 in the week ending March 25, a decrease of 15 from the
prior week. There were 2,359 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 92 from the preceding week.
There were 33,788 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits during the week ending March 18, an increase of 1,643 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 32,542,
an increase of 138 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
March 18 were in Alaska (6.9 percent), Puerto Rico (6.3), Rhode Island (5.6),
Washington (4.5), California (4.4), Idaho (4.4), Maine (4.2), Montana (4.2),
Oregon (4.0), and Pennsylvania (3.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
March 25 were in Ohio (+1,570), Arkansas (+1,026), Oregon (+874), California
(+806), and Arizona (+428), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina
(-3,914), Texas (-2,143), Iowa (-1,248), New York (-1,217), and Michigan
(-1,180).
