In the week ending March 25, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 338,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 348,000. The 4-week moving average was
341,750, an increase of 1,500 from the previous week's revised average of
340,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending March 18, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 18 was 2,506,000, a decrease of
36,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,542,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,513,250, a decrease of 10,750 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,524,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 305,409 in the week ending March 25, a decrease
of 13,822 from the previous week. There were 292,661 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7
percent during the week ending March 18, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 2,952,277, a decrease of 110,932 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.0 percent and the volume was
3,193,930.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico
during the week ending March 11.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,730 in the week ending March 18, a decrease of 379 from the
prior week. There were 2,451 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 242 from the preceding week.
There were 32,162 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits during the week ending March 11, a decrease of 3,752 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 32,344,
a decrease of 1,510 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
March 11 were in Alaska (7.5 percent), Rhode Island (6.2), Puerto Rico (5.9),
Idaho (4.9), Montana (4.8), Washington (4.8), California (4.3), Maine (4.3),
Pennsylvania (4.3), and West Virginia (4.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
March 18 were in Texas (+923), Iowa (+843), Wisconsin (+669), Oregon (+458),
and Kentucky (+160), while the largest decreases were in Ohio (-1,764),
Missouri (-1,721), New Jersey (-1,662), New York (-1,652), and Pennsylvania
(-1,488).
