In the week ending March 18, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 346,000, an increase of 3,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 343,000. The 4-week moving average was
339,750, an increase of 500 from the previous week's unrevised average of
339,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending March 11, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 11 was 2,548,000, an increase of
48,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,500,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,525,500, an increase of 7,750 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,517,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 317,859 in the week ending March 18, a decrease
of 21,721 from the previous week. There were 308,038 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8
percent during the week ending March 11, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 3,070,895, an increase of 16,444 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 3.1 percent and the volume was 3,328,411.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico
during the week ending March 4.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,106 in the week ending March 11, an increase of 183 from
the prior week. There were 2,690 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
an increase of 205 from the preceding week.
There were 35,996 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits during the week ending March 4, an increase of 2,658 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 34,013,
an increase of 666 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
March 4 were in Alaska (6.7 percent), Puerto Rico (6.7), Rhode Island (5.8),
Idaho (4.9), Washington (4.6), California (4.4), Maine (4.4), Montana (4.4),
Oregon (4.0), and Pennsylvania (4.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
March 11 were in California (+4,775), North Carolina (+2,089), Texas (+1,668),
Louisiana (+903), and Alabama (+835), while the largest decreases were in New
York (-3,484), Georgia (-1,858), Washington (-1,207), Illinois (-1,007), and
Colorado (-686).
