In the week ending March 11, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 343,000, an increase of 5,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 338,000. The 4-week moving average was
339,250, a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of
340,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending March 4, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 4 was 2,511,000, an increase of 3,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,508,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,521,250, an increase of 2,000 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,519,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 339,381 in the week ending March 11, a decrease
of 2,681 from the previous week. There were 331,023 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8
percent during the week ending March 4, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 3,068,760, a decrease of 76,839 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.2 percent and the volume was
3,357,435.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico
during the week ending Feb. 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,922 in the week ending March 4, an increase of 170 from the
prior week. There were 2,484 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 301 from the preceding week.
There were 33,423 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits during the week ending Feb. 25, a decrease of 2,232 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 33,316,
a decrease of 1,150 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Feb. 25 were in Alaska (8.0 percent), Puerto Rico (6.9), Rhode Island (6.8),
Idaho (5.2), Montana (5.0), Washington (5.0), Maine (4.4), Pennsylvania (4.4),
California (4.3), and West Virginia (4.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
March 4 were in New York (+6,625), California (+6,210), Pennsylvania (+2,592),
Illinois (+2,227), and Washington (+2,010), while the largest decreases were in
Massachusetts (-3,472), North Carolina (-2,423), Tennessee (-1,407), Rhode
Island (-1,165), and South Carolina (-833).
