In the week ending Feb. 18, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 349,000, an increase of 2,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 347,000. The 4-week moving average was
335,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised average of
329,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending Feb. 11, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Feb. 11 was 2,540,000, an increase of
55,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,485,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,496,750, a decrease of 5,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,502,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 361,539 in the week ending Feb. 18, a decrease of
25,771 from the previous week. There were 368,626 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9
percent during the week ending Feb. 11, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 3,169,355, an increase of 100,626 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.4 percent and the volume was
3,604,923.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico
during the week ending Feb. 4.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,467 in the week ending Feb. 11, an increase of 38 from the
prior week. There were 2,658 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 38 from the preceding week.
There were 38,053 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits during the week ending Feb. 4, an increase of 2,250 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 36,266,
an increase of 601 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Feb. 4 were in Alaska (7.3 percent), Puerto Rico (6.6), Rhode Island (5.8),
Washington (4.9), Idaho (4.6), Montana (4.6), California (4.4), Maine (4.3),
0regon (4.2), Pennsylvania (4.0), and West Virginia (4.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Feb. 11 were in Pennsylvania (+4,084), California (+3,047), New York (+2,507),
Kentucky (+1,914), and Maryland (+1,809), while the largest decreases were in
Michigan (-2,423), Illinois (-2,173), Ohio (-1,131), Oregon (-1,095), and South
Carolina (-672).
