In the week ending Feb. 4, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 318,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 326,000. The 4-week moving average was
327,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of
336,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending Jan. 28, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Jan. 28 was 2,503,000, an increase of
57,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,446,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,486,750, an increase of 8,750 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,478,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 381,672 in the week ending Feb. 4, a decrease of
14,800 from the previous week. There were 426,761 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9
percent during the week ending Jan. 28, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 3,141,797, an increase of 13,724 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 3.2 percent and the volume was 3,419,383.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Jan. 21.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,708 in the week ending Jan. 28, an increase of 335 from the
prior week. There were 2,801 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 139 from the preceding week.
There were 40,416 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits during the week ending Jan. 21, an increase of 4,433 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 37,648,
an increase of 2,285 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Jan. 21 were in Puerto Rico (7.6 percent), Alaska (7.5), Rhode Island (5.8),
Washington (5.1), California (4.6), Idaho (4.6), Montana (4.6), Maine (4.4),
Oregon (4.3), Pennsylvania (3.9), and West Virginia (3.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Jan. 28 were in California (+9,999), Michigan (+4,105), Illinois +1,937), New
York +(1,077), and Wisconsin (+724), while the largest decreases were in
Tennessee (-6,610), North Carolina (-3,498), South Carolina (-3,443),
Connecticut (-2,390), and Ohio (-2,018).
