UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 325,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 338,000. The 4-week moving average was 338,750, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 337,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending Jan. 14, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 14 was 2,573,000, an increase of 134,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,439,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,511,500, an increase of 10,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,500,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 401,328 in the week ending Jan. 21, a decrease of 205,857 from the previous week. There were 427,136 initial claims in the comparable week in 1994.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent during the week ending Jan. 14, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,120,891, a decrease of 86,470 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.0 percent and the volume was 3,193,328.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Jan. 7.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 4,163 in the week ending Jan. 14, an increase of 265 from the prior week. There were 3,499 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 634 from the preceding week.

There were 40,522 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits during the week ending Jan. 7, an increase of 6,735 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 38,192, an increase of 3,961 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 7 were in Puerto Rico (7.4 percent), Alaska (7.2), Rhode Island (5.7), Washington (5.1), Idaho (4.6), California (4.4), Montana (4.2), Maine (4.1), Oregon (4.1), and Pennsylvania (4.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 14 were in California (+16,608), Ohio (+7,552), Texas (+5,868), New Jersey (+5,411), and Tennessee (+5,211), while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania (-6,864), Michigan (-5,521), Wisconsin (-5,466), South Carolina (-5,184), and Kentucky (-4,919).
