In the week ending Jan. 14, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 323,000, a decrease of 31,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 354,000. The 4-week moving average was
334,000, a decrease of 500 from the previous week's revised average of
334,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending Jan. 7, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Jan. 7 was 2,450,000, a decrease of 18,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,468,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,503,500, a decrease of 11,000 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,514,500.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 581,553 in the week ending Jan. 14, a decrease of
31,072 from the previous week. There were 571,241 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0
percent during the week ending Jan. 7, an increase of 0.3 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 3,221,547, an increase of 302,270 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.3 percent and the volume was
3,449,472.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Dec. 31.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 3,883 in the week ending Jan. 7, an increase of 1,690 from
the prior week. There were 2,864 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
an increase of 393 from the preceding week.
There were 33,742 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits during the week ending Dec. 31, a decrease of 4,004 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 34,199,
an increase of 599 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Dec. 31 were in Alaska (6.9 percent), Rhode Island (5.8), Puerto Rico (4.9),
Washington (4.8), Idaho (4.3), Oregon (4.3), California (4.0), Montana (3.9),
Connecticut (3.8), and Pennsylvania (3.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Jan. 7 were in North Carolina (+20,793), California (+16,140), Tennessee
(+14,292), New York (+13,720), and Alabama (+13,205), while the largest
decreases were in Wisconsin (-9,277), Rhode Island (-2,538), Massachusetts
(-2,226), Arkansas (-1,762), and Kentucky (-1,349).
