In the week ending Jan. 7, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 355,000, an increase of 17,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 338,000. The 4-week moving average was
334,750, an increase of 8,000 from the previous week's revised average of
326,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending Dec. 31, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Dec. 31 was 2,510,000, a decrease of 44,000
from the preceding week's unrevised level of 2,554,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,522,000, an increase of 18,750 from the preceding week's
unrevised average of 2,503,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 615,229 in the week ending Jan. 7, an increase of
132,463 from the previous week. There were 675,448 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1994.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8
percent during the week ending Dec. 31, an increase of 0.4 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 2,969,919, an increase of 382,655 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.2 percent and the volume was
3,367,915.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Dec. 24.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,190 in the week ending Dec. 31, a decrease of 97 from the
prior week. There were 2,468 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 367 from the preceding week.
There were 37,781 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits during the week ending Dec. 24, an increase of 4,225 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 33,468,
a decrease of 548 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Dec. 24 were in Alaska (6.4 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), Washington (4.7),
Rhode Island (4.5), Idaho (4.0), Oregon (3.9), California (3.8), Montana (3.7),
Maine (3.2), and Arkansas (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Dec. 31 were in Wisconsin (+13,125), Pennsylvania (+11,533), Michigan (+8,830),
North Carolina (+8,678), and Massachusetts (+5,282), while the largest
decreases were in California (-8,364), Illinois (-5,521), Texas (-3,747),
Virginia (-2,513), and Washington (-1,448).
