Elaine L. Chao

Born in Taipai, Taiwan; graduate of Mount Holyoke College and Harvard Business School. Served as President and Chief Executive Officer of United Way of America, Vice President of Syndications at BankAmerica Capital Markets Group, and a banker with Citicorp. Government service included Director of the Peace Corps, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Chair of the Federal maritime Commission, Deputy Maritime Administration in the U.S. Department of Transportation, and White House Fellow. Also a Distinguished Fellow at the Heritage Foundation.

Appointed by George W. Bush. Priorities included changing white collar overtime regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act and union financial disclosure regulations. Other major initiatives included the Pension Protection Act of 2006 and regulatory changes to the Family and Medical Leave Act.
