Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
Positions are located at the Postal Square Building.

Predicting the nation's occupational outlook, counting the weekly jobless claims and following the fluctuations in the rate of inflation, are just a few of the functions performed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). As the Department's oldest component, BLS is the nation's principal fact-finding agency charged with reporting on key employment indicators that affect the personal living conditions of all Americans. Data produced by the Bureau has been used in a variety of capacities that range from determining economic performance to formulating public and social policy.

Star Button Office Automation Clerk, GS-326-2/3/4/5, BLS-01-SUM (Multiple positions)
Position Brief:As a Clerk (OA), you will perform clerical, assistant, or technical work that requires knowledge of the procedures and techniques involved in carrying out the work of an organization and involved application of procedures and practices within the framework of established guidelines.
Background Needed:Students must possess word processing skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel. A qualified typist is required (40 wpm). To qualify for the GS-4/5 levels you must have educational experience beyond the high school level.

Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA)
Positions are located at the Frances Perkins Building.

The Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) is responsible for the administration and enforcement of Title I of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) and the Federal Employees' Retirement System Act of 1986 (FERSA). The primary mission of EBSA is to protect the pension, health and other benefits of participants in private sector employee benefit plans. EBSA directly affects the livelihood of over 150 million people who participate in ERISA covered plans, and protects the U.S. economy's single largest source of capital for investment--pension funds. Currently, there are over six (6) million private sector employee benefit plans which hold more than $4 trillion in assets.

Star Button   Investigator, GS-1801-7/9, EBSA-01-SUM (Multiple positions)
Position Brief: In this position you will conduct report and document analysis and research laws administered by EBSA involving employee benefits plans. You may assist investigators in the conduct of civil and criminal investigations. You will receive calls and inquiries for information relative to office programs and activities. In addition, you will use word processing software and printing equipment to create, copy, edit, store, retrieve and print a variety of standardized documents using a glossary or prerecorded formats, form letters, standard paragraphs, and mailing lists. You will also participate in special projects with senior specialists requiring that the student accomplish some of the tasks that would normally be done by the specialist.
Background Needed: One year or above of graduate studies in business, accounting or pre-law.

Employment Standards Administration (ESA)
Positions are located at the Frances Perkins Building.

The Employment Standards Administration (ESA) provides oversight for the nation's minimum wage laws, leadership in workers' compensation programs for injured or disabled workers and enforcement of Equal Employment Opportunity contract regulations.

(Multiple Positions)

Position Brief:You will be responsible for performing a variety of clerical and technical duties in support of management and program analysis. You will also be responsible for filing, compiling data, word processing and data entry, and for providing general assistance to the professional staff.
Background Needed:College students with knowledge of word processing. and data entry. A qualified typist is required. (40wpm)

Star Button Office Automation Clerk/Assistant, GS-326-1/2/3/4/5/6/7, ESA-02-SUM (Multiple Positions)
Position Brief:You will be responsible for answering telephones, assisting callers and referring them to the appropriate staff. You will also be responsible for providing general assistance to the professional staff, handling all incoming mail, filing and word processing.
Background Needed:Students with knowledge of word processing. A qualified typist is required. (40 wpm)

Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)
All positions are located in Beckley, WV.

Healthy miners and safe mines remain the driving force behind the Mine Safety and Health Administration's dedication to one of the nation's most viable and traditional industries. The agency inspects mines and tunnels, promotes technological initiatives designed to remove the danger incurred while mining and sponsors continuing education programs for industry workers. Together with other Federal Agencies and industry leaders, MSHA anchors a partnership established to improve the life and career opportunities for American miners.

Star Button Mining/Training Assistant, GS-1702-5, MSHA-01-SUM
Position Brief: This position is located at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beckley, West Virginia. The Mining/Training Technician works in the Department of Instructional Services, Branch of Mining Technology. The technician works with the training instructors for developmental experiences, on-the-job training and the performance of routine, simple assignments in support of designated staff members. Assists in the set-up and conduct of underground laboratory exercises in the mine simulation laboratory in various technical courses including ventilation, fire control, and mine emergencies. Assists in construction in the mine simulation laboratory of simulated ventilation controls such as stoppings, overcasts, and line curtains.
Background Needed: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree or three years' general experience, one of which was equivalent to at least a GS-4 level or a combination of experience and education. Mining engineering student preferred.

Star Button Library Technician, GS-1411-4/5, MSHA-02-SUM
Position Brief: This position is located at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beckley, West Virginia. The library technician works in the Technical Information Center and Library. The position includes inputting data in Microsoft Access database, bar-coding of book collection, inputting and retrieving information relative to mine safety and health, and formatting or reformatting information in Microsoft Word.
Background Needed:Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree or three years' general experience, one of which was equivalent to at least a GS-4 level or a combination of experience and education. Familiarity with Microsoft Access and Microsoft Word. Library science degree student preferred.

Star Button Office Automation Assistant, GS-303-5/6, MSHA-03-SUM
Position Brief:This position is located at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beckley, West Virginia. The Office Automation Assistant works in the Department of Instructional Services. This position provides technical support to professional staff members by assisting in compiling and preparation of training course materials into the model course format. Prepares, organizes, scans and reformats documents, manuals, and presentations to be used by Academy instructors.
Background Needed: Proficiency in Access, Excel, Microsoft Word, Visio and AutoCAD preferred. Information Technology student preferred .

The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management provides internal administrative leadership for the Department in areas such as financial planning, budget formulation, human resources, enforcement of equal opportunity, statutes, contracting and grant management, information systems development and internal health and safety program.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
Positions are located at the Frances Perkins Building

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration assures as much as possible that all American workers return from work healthy and uninjured. Both Agency and State programs develop mandatory safety and health regulations and enforce them firmly, but fairly, to protect employees against work-related safety and health hazards. OSHA complements these efforts with significant training, education and information programs designed to help employers and employees recognize, reduce and eliminate work hazards.

Position Brief:In this position you will work with staff in researching issues and developing information tracking systems for program activities.
Background Needed:Undergraduate/graduate student with course work in computer science/information technology, health/life sciences, legal studies or criminal justice, communications and business/public administration.
